The cables are turned at the beginning of the row so you should get the scalloped edge effect whether you're slipping the first stitch or not, but I do slip the first stitch, except as noted, on the cable turning rows.

Keep adding in multiples of 32 stitches to the desired width and repeat the written pattern in each group!

After ribbing the first 8 rows turn the cable on the first 16 stitches. Then rib the next 16 stitches. You'll turn the next cable on row 18. The cables are designed to always turn the cable at the beginning of the row. Knitting has two sides. The first cable is turned on side "A" the second cable is turned on side "B". Start knitting and do what the pattern says. It's like magic. Just take the leap and follow the pattern.

There are 8 rows of ribbing before turning the first cable. I would use 8 rows after the last cable, then bind off.

If I were doing this in different colors I might do the first cable in one color and the second in another color, which would put you into intarsia, probably something that would make the scarf a whole lot more difficult, but doable. If I used a multi-colored yarn it would need to be subtle color variations so that the cable work doesn't get lost in a blaze of color. Misti Alpaca make a multi-color hand paint that would work nicely.

I used a needle one size larger than recommended on the ball band. The Misti Alpaca calls for an 10 US, 8 mm. Thick yarn, thick needles.

I designed this so the cable is always turned at the beginning of the row. even numbered rows, 2, 4, 6 are side "A" and odd numbers 1, 3, 5 are side "B". The cable is held toward you on side "A" and away from you on side "B". This will make sense as soon as you start knitting. Take it one step at a time and you'll be fine!
