This scarf is knit in a wonderful yarn – Misti Alpaca Chunky. It’s about 48″ long by 4″ wide, so it’s not a huge scarf and it knits up fast. It is, however, exceptionally soft and warm and it’s appropriate for both men and women. It’s shown here in a lighter gray, but it would look great in a brighter color or a multi.

I made this scarf in dark grey and it turned out awesome! Thanks for the pattern!
What an incredible yet simple design. I’ve been trying to figure out what to use my ‘pumpkin’ Misty chunky for and now I know.
PS–any ideas for a matching hat or gloves?
What a beautiful scarf! This is my next project.
I would love to learn how to make this? Are private lessons available? I have trouble reading patterns, and I primarily crochet. Thanks!
Like the look of this scarf. Can’t wait to knit it.
Hi Deb,
Yes, private lessons are available. If you know how to knit and purl all you may need is a cable turning consult!

Should all the “even” rows of rows (1-8) be purl 2 knit 2? It is stating that they be done in (knit 2 purl 2)?
I’ve tried to adapt this design to other weights of yarn without a lot of success. Something about how the proportions scale just doesn’t work. We carry one other yarn that works well, but it’s similar in weight to the Misti Chunky. You might try doubling your yarn.
You start each row with 2 knits – odds and evens. You’ll always end with 2 purls.
when i slip the stitches to the cable needle.. the yarn i work with stays in the cable needle.. and it’s really complicated to work the regular stitches then.. is it supposed to be this way? or i make sth wrong? thank you..
Take the working yarn behind the cable needle and knit the next stitches on the left needle. Try not to knit too tightly. Then knit the stitches from the cable needle. It can be a little tight. Don’t twist the stitches on the cable needle, just lay them across.
What ply is the misti Alpaca Chunky and what is (2 skeins) mean..I’m a basic knitter from Australia
Thanks Stacey
im having trouble knitting this cable, it doesnt look right. when you slip first 8 stitches how do you bring your yarn over to knit? and then when knitting of the cable needle it is tight and doesnt seem to work
looks great! can’t wait to start it! thanks for the pattern!
I’m looking for clarification on the pattern. In the instructions (row 9 and row 18) it only instructs to work the cable on the first 16 stitches? Is it an alternat schedule for the last 16 stitches of cabling? Am I missing something. I’m itching to make this!
hay there =)
this scarf is luuurvy! i have been TRYING to knit it for my darling mother, but something just isnt working!are the needles size 11UK or US? ???
just to confirm.. is it very thin needles with a VERY thik yarn? thankyou so much!

Melita =)

Hi Melita,
A US 11, a thick needle and thick yarn. I wanted this to be fast and easy!

The cable is always turned at the beginning of the row. The first time on side “A” the second time on side “B”. I hope this helps. Cornelia
Hi Snoopy!,
The cable is always turned at the beginning of the row. The first time on side ‘A’, the second time on side ‘B’. Every row starts with knit 2 and ends with purl 2, so after turning the cable continue in k2, p2 until the end of the row! Hope this helps.

Hi, how would you do this with different colours and how many colours 2 or 4? Thanks it looks great, I can’t wait to start!
How many rows of ribbing did you use to start and finish the scarf? The
pattern starts with the cable. Thanks, Bunny
I have never knitted cables, so I’m wondering on Row 9 , if I slip the first 8 stitches to the cable needle, then K2P2 the next 8 on the left needle, then bring 8 stitches that are on the cable need around and knit them, then I knit K2P2 to the end of row, wouldn’t I end up with one cable? Shouldn’t I knit another cable next to it (on row 9) to get the beautiful twist pattern you have going on with this scarf? I think I’m the only one confused, but could you please clear this up for me? Thanks
Would like to make this much wider maybe a small afghan….Have no idea how to do that , can you help?
I love this pattern but I can’t seem to make the cable rows work. I am having an issue where on the rows I cable get a thread across one side. When you turn the cable, you do so on the right needle, yes? Am I just not pulling the stitch after slipping the 8 stitches to the cable needle tight enough? (I pull as tight as I can, but then when I go to do the 8 stitches off the cable needle onto the right needle, it’s extremely hard to have enough room to even knit). Thanks for your help!
Hello designer. I am wondering…did you do the refined edge by slipping each stitch at the beginning of each row? I am just curious since I am working on this scarf for a gift and it just doesn’t look the same. It doesn’t have that shape; instead it’s a straight scarf with cables laying on it. I’m just trying to figure out if slipping the stitches would help me get the shape that I want..
I’m a newbie to knitting and started to get confused while attempting this amazing design. When i read the pattern it sounds like the cable work is all completed on the right side of the scarf, but in the illustration it looks like your scarf has cabling on both sides. Do I need to slip the last 8 stitches on a cable needle to get the illustrated look?
I joined the ends for a beautiful cowl on one of my tries and it is gorgeous. The next time I had some wool from Ireland but not enough for a long scarf so I made a button hole on one side and put a button on the other and now have a neat cravat/neck warmer.
Hi;
This is a really lovely scarf.
Am just learning to knit, so need help on some parts.
For the last part, you advised that “For a more refined edge, slip the first stitch of each row knitwise. Do not slip on cable rows.” Does this means that example from Rows 1 to 8: K2 P2 to end becomes Rows 1 to 8: S1 K1 P2 k2 p2 to end?
Thank You
Min
A skein is the same as a hank, or a ball. Misti is 109 yards or 100 meters. It’s a very soft two ply, though I don’t think the ply is necessarily important. The gauge is actually what you’re looking for. Cornelia
The first turn of the cable doesn’t look right until you’ve worked a bit further. If turning the first cable with the 8 stitches on the cable needle toward you pick up the live yarn and knit into the 9th stitch. Don’t pull too tightly, give the cable some room to breathe. If you are a tight knitter the cable will be tight. I recommend Turbo Addi’s for tight knitters, like me, because they are slippy. Just keep knitting and you’ll find the right tension for turning the cables.
I designed this so the cable is always turned at the beginning of the row. even numbered rows, 2, 4, 6 are side “A” and odd numbers 1, 3, 5 are side “B”. The cable is held toward you on side “A” and away from you on side “B”. This will make sense as soon as you start knitting. Take it one step at a time and you’ll be fine! Cornelia
I used a needle one size larger than recommended on the ball band. The Misti Alpaca calls for an 10 US, 8 mm. Thick yarn, thick needles.
If I were doing this in different colors I might do the first cable in one color and the second in another color, which would put you into intarsia, probably something that would make the scarf a whole lot more difficult, but doable. If I used a multi-colored yarn it would need to be subtle color variations so that the cable work doesn’t get lost in a blaze of color. Misti Alpaca make a multi-color hand paint that would work nicely.
There are 8 rows of ribbing before turning the first cable. I would use 8 rows after the last cable, then bind off.
After ribbing the first 8 rows turn the cable on the first 16 stitches. Then rib the next 16 stitches. You’ll turn the next cable on row 18. The cables are designed to always turn the cable at the beginning of the row. Knitting has two sides. The first cable is turned on side “A” the second cable is turned on side “B”. Start knitting and do what the pattern says. It’s like magic. Just take the leap and follow the pattern.
Keep adding in multiples of 32 stitches to the desired width and repeat the written pattern in each group!
The cables are turned at the beginning of the row so you should get the scalloped edge effect whether you’re slipping the first stitch or not, but I do slip the first stitch, except as noted, on the cable turning rows.
Have faith and follow the pattern and it will make sense. See earlier questions and answers.
Yes!
Just in case anyone is just stumbling across this beautiful pattern, I would suggest NOT using a multicolored yarn (or at least not a darker one with much lighter colors mixed in)… that is what I used and I found it quite distracts from the cable and kind of looks misshapen at some angles. I would stick with a solid color for this one.
