Bella Spiral Scarf

This pretty scarf is knit using short row shaping.  If you lay it flat it forms a doughnut.  I used a combination of Sublime Kid Mohair Blend and Filatura di Crosa New Smoking (for glitter).  It required two balls of each, and is knit on size 13 needles.  It would also be beautiful in Kid Seta Kid Mohair.  One customer knit it up in dark blue Malabrigo Worsted, and that looked great too.  If you haven’t knit short rows, don’t be put off.  It’s actually a simple technique that is useful in many contexts, including creating a beautiful shoulder line in sweaters.  And believe me, by the time you’ve finished this scarf you’ll really know how to knit short rows.

The scarf is 5 inches wide and measures about 50 inches along the shorter edge.  The general technique is to cast on a multiple of three stitches, work the first short row 2/3 of the way across, the second 1/3 of the way, and then to knit back picking up the wraps.

I love this scarf! I am a new knitter and from the information that you provide about knitting this scarf , I have to admit that I am a little confused. Can you send me the pattern? If not, do you sell the pattern in your store?

    Thanks for your help!

Should I knit two strands of yarn at the same time with this pattern? I bought Baby Llama’s designer choice yarn to knit.

Sorry for such a slow reply. You can knit this pattern with any yarn or combination of yarns. Just cast on a multiple of 3 stitches and do the short rows by thirds. Call if you have questions.

    Hi Crystal,

I knit this with Misti Alpaca chunky which calls for a 10 needle. So if two strands would give you the bulk of a yarn callling for a 10 needle you’ll befine.

There is no specific pattern for this scarf. It can be done in any yarn – as pictured, it is knit holding two yarns together, a kid mohair (Sublime “Kid Mohair Blend”, since discontinued) and Filatura di Crosa “Night”. I cast on 21 stitches – any multiple of three will do. If you google “short row shaping” you should be able to locate a video that will show you the technique. Knit across and back, then knit 2/3 of the way (e.g. 14 stitches), wrap and purl back, then knit 1/3 of the way (7 stitches), wrap and purl back. Then knit all the way across, picking up the wraps, and purl back. Begin again by knitting 2/3 of the way and continue as above to desired length.
